How to get started in woodwork

Woodworking is probably one of the best things that we can do for ourselves it can be a very self satisfying hobby or as you get more competent can be a lucrative living. I have been a carpenter for over 25yrs and done most things from fitting out houses, hospitals, office blocks to garden sheds, gazebos, pergolas and making furniture. You can make plenty of money on woodworking projects if you are a hands on person with a bit about you. You can build chairs, tables, beds, sheds, playhouses and many other things and if you build them well it’s very easy to sell your products on.

In all the years that I have been working with wood most my satisfaction as been gained out of making furniture for the house and reselling on and making garden products, you be amazed at the amount of different styles of shed that you can make that you would never be able to buy and its this that gets you orders, like with the furniture when making it yourself it is all made with proper mortise and tenon and dovetail joints not the glued and screwed flat pack joints that come with mass produced furniture these days.

All you need is a bit of guidance and this can come in the form of good quality sets of plans and blueprints with step by step instructions and most DIY toolkits.

One of the great things about learning to work with wood is that it can give families with low income the chance to create there own unique furniture at a far better quality and for a fraction of the price of shop bought goods and maybe create a second income as more and more people are now turning to handmade as they are now aware that the quality is far superior and the products tend to last far longer than the mass produced equivalent. It takes time to become really skilful of course but everyone has to start somewhere in order to become successful, but like everything we do in life the more we do something the easier and quicker we do it It's never too late to start your woodworking projects and it's a fun hobby to practice as well.
